Allbäck Zinc Oxide Additive

Sale price$34.65

Volume: 200 mL
Description

Zinc Oxide is known to have mildew retarding properties and is especially useful in humid or wet climates. It is generally recommended to add 20% Zinc Oxide when using Allbäck's linseed oil paint outdoors. Add 200 mL of Zinc Oxide Additive to every litre of paint and for all coats. This is a good general rule for most projects but ultimately depends on project conditions.

To be effective, it is recommended to have at least 10% Zinc Oxide, but adding too much Zinc can potentially lighten the colour. When adding Zinc Oxide to your paint, start by adding 10% and work up from there.

Allbäck Zinc Oxide as additive gives full control to the painter over how much to add to the paint to meet the unique demands of each project. For example, in arid climates or in most indoor environments, little to no Zinc Oxide may be necessary. Alternatively, in climates that are especially favourable to microbe growth, more Zinc Oxide, even up to 35%, can increase resistance but may lighten the colour of the paint.

Zinc Oxide can also have a mild siccative effect, meaning that the paint can dry (oxidize) a little faster and become a little harder. This can be useful when painting floors or surfaces that are exposed to a lot of wear.

Allbäck Zinc Oxide Additive is made from zinc oxide powder, dispersed in Allbäck Purified Boiled Linseed Oil, so adding it to the paint is very easy.

Notes on preventing mould & mildew

Mould and mildew can occur on all kinds of surfaces where the conditions for growth are favourable. When planning a strategy to avoid the occurence of microbes on a building surface, we must think about how to maximize the impact of our efforts. Zinc oxide and other paint chemistry is one component, but we must also consider other variables that can have an even greater impact:

  • The Environment: Is the relative humidity high? Are surfaces exposed to the sun? Is there good air flow around the building? Are there trees, shrubs, and other vegetation? Are there pollens or other foods for microbes on the surface?
  • The Construction: Do the elements of the building shed water adequately? Are there gutters and downspouts installed? Are horizontal surfaces such as window sills sloped away from the building? Are cracks, holes, and joints sealed?
  • Paint Chemistry: Is the surface well cleaned? Is there zinc oxide in the paint? Is there an adequate paint film to seal the surface?
Notes on cost

Adding Zinc Oxide to the linseed oil paint does not increase its overall cost per area. For example, adding 20% zinc to the paint gives you 20% more paint and also covers 20% more surface.

Results are great

Bonjour,

I have been using Sage Restoration’s products, expertise and dedication to the conservation of heritage buildings for a few years now on my projects. Results are great.
I look forward to continue working with Sage Restoration to solve problems that always pop-up on projects, be it heritage or modern buildings.

Highly Recommend Zinc Oxide

We're slowly restoring our late 1800s house and used the Linseed Oil Paint in "Midnight Blue". Beautiful color and beautiful coverage on the first coat. We mixed in Zinc Oxyde with the paint and highly recommend it. We used two 3L cans per walls.

The greatest gift to our historical house

The greatest gift to our historical house has been getting products and support from Sage Restoration. Your team always makes time to discuss issues, give advice and think about solutions. It feels the Sage team is part of my restoration crew!

I have become a fervent advertiser for Sage among my friends and colleagues - I only take a 10% commission 😉

This summer, I worked on a variety of projects, one of which is the stripping of our oak front door from 1910. The door had been painted over with black paint, but some very old varnish was visible under the black paint. I primed the door with the door with Tonkinoise Bio Impression oil, and finished off with Tonkinoise Marine #1.

I re-build the door steps partly with quarter sawn oak, which I varnished. I painted the lower part of the door step with a mix of Holkham green and Black at a 1:1 ratio.

I also stripped the wrought iron gate of over a century of paint build-up and repainted it with Allback Black Linseed Oil paint. I re-set the top window with Linseed oil Putty and the reset the leaded glass with a mix of Putty, oil and iron oxide powder. This was a relatively small project but one that made a huge impact. In the meantime, the stone ornaments have been re-jointed with lime based mortar (albeit not the Sage one!).

5 Stars! 10 out of 10!

5 Stars! 10 out of 10!

I went to Sage after a long journey learning about linseed oil paints and restoration. They were knowledgeable answering my questions regarding the putty, paint, temperatures for curing, types of oils to prime with, how to apply the oils...on and on and on. Thank you for being a source for renewable, sustainable and true restoration products in Canada.

Highly recommend

I have been a customer of Sage restoration since 2018. Have used their paint, putty and other linseed oil products regularly, in fact daily during the week. Working with natural products can have a few more challenges, however I have received expert advice from both Michael and John and have been extremely happy with the results. For example, I had a roofer paint my steel barn roof every few years with whatever environmentally unfriendly paint he normally used. It didn't last. I convinced him to use the Allback paint and it has lasted a lot longer, and it still looks great. We have used the pine tar carried by Sage Restoration instead of using pressure treated wood which is bad for the environment. I have painted the inside of my house, our barn windows and many many projects, I could go on and on. But anyway if you care about not putting nasty chemicals onto the walls of your home or other projects, I highly recommend the products that Sage Restoration carries. As an added bonus their shipping is very quick, often the next day !!
