Description

This test kit is designed to help with learning the nuances of the pine tar and linseed oil material, used separately and together in different mixing ratios for staining and protecting surfaces as well as for testing application methods and strategies for a particular project before diving in.

The kit is ideal for anyone at any level who wants to learn the material and do tests before proceeding with a project.

Application

Apply Pine Tar to bare wood or to wood that was formerly treated with Pine Tar or natural oil, such as Purified Linseed Oil.

Clean the surface with Linseed Soap and water to remove dust and dirt from the wood with a brush. Rinse well and allow to dry.

Pine Tar comes concentrated and can be applied on its own or diluted. There are many old recipes. For most applications on wood, we like to mix 50/50 with Purified Linseed Oil and apply the mixture warm (approx. 60ºC) and to a warm surface in order to avoid the need for solvents. This helps to promote penetration into the wood for a long-lasting result. Adjust the ratio according to your project.

The approximate spread rate of this pine tar mixture is 60-100 sqft per litre, depending on the mixing ratio, density, smoothness, and overall condition of the substrate. It is also important to consider the environmental conditions. See the Auson Technical Data Sheet below for more detail.

Minimum operating temperature: 10-15ºC on the surface and in the air. Beware of invisible condensation on surfaces below 15ºC.

Drying can take from several days to several weeks depending on the weather and other environmental conditions as well as on the condition of the surface and its porosity.

Notes

Raw Linseed Oil is a deep penetrating oil that is slow to dry. It must be well absorbed by the timber and is well suited to most projects, including wooden facades and roofs. Boiled Linseed Oil is a drying oil that can become hard and form a film on the surface after several coats and is well suited to projects where a faster drying time and harder finish is desired, such as walked-on surfaces.

Genuine Pine Tar is a product of nature that is viscous and sticky, where the viscosity may range slightly from batch to batch.

Highly recommend

I have been a customer of Sage restoration since 2018. Have used their paint, putty and other linseed oil products regularly, in fact daily during the week. Working with natural products can have a few more challenges, however I have received expert advice from both Michael and John and have been extremely happy with the results. For example, I had a roofer paint my steel barn roof every few years with whatever environmentally unfriendly paint he normally used. It didn't last. I convinced him to use the Allback paint and it has lasted a lot longer, and it still looks great. We have used the pine tar carried by Sage Restoration instead of using pressure treated wood which is bad for the environment. I have painted the inside of my house, our barn windows and many many projects, I could go on and on. But anyway if you care about not putting nasty chemicals onto the walls of your home or other projects, I highly recommend the products that Sage Restoration carries. As an added bonus their shipping is very quick, often the next day !!

Thirlled with the products

I have been thrilled with the products I have purchased for our projects around our home and the advice/service from the Sage Restoration Team has been incredible. Extending the life of our cedar deck and shed is extremely important to us for three significant reasons. I'm proud of my work and want it to last as long as possible, I want to use natural products that won't harm the environment and I want the end result to look great. Sage products not only enable me to reach these goals, they go above and beyond expectations. The added bonus is how easy the products are to use. I'm so impressed, I know I will use linseed oils, paints, putty and other products when I build future outside projects or give tired projects a new lease on life. Thank you so much for providing a tried and true alternative that won't harm us, future generations or the planet!

Durable, beautiful finish

We used all sage restoration products on our pack porch. The boards were aged in the sun for a few weeks after construction, then scrubbed with linseed oil soap. Primed with raw linseed oil after drying and then treated with Dalbrand Tratjara pine tar mixed with boiled linseed oil. The black border boards were treated Svartjara pine tar mixed with the same. It’s easy to use, easy to apply, durable and the results speak for themselves. We’ve tried to use various wax stains, or acrylic coatings in the past which ultimately resulted in rebuilding the entire project after the boards shrank/rotted. If you want a durable, beautiful finish that will keep your wood vibrant and sturdy Sage restoration is the way to go.

I like the choice of colours you supply

I used the pine tar and raw linseed oil mix on the wooden posts and floor joists in my basement to prevent mold and inhibit moisture. Easy to apply, absorbed well into the pine and cedar wood which dates back to 1880 when my log farmhouse was built.

I will be in touch when I have some interior painting needed, I like the choice of colours you supply.
